To the Finish Line - Sam Houston Race Park

Whenever someone speaks of horse racing, the scene in My Fair Lady pops into mind where everyone dresses up with large hats and frilly dresses. Of course nowadays no one dresses like that anymore although a trip to the race park can be a posh affair. With that said, if you are planning a trip to Houston, Texas, why don’t you plan a trip to the Sam Houston Race Park? It is located in the unincorporated northwest of Houston that hosts Thoroughbred horse racing and American Quarter Horse annually, as well as country, rock and classic rock concerts.
The Sam Houston Race Park was opened to the public in 1994 and is the first Class 1 Horse Racing venue ever in Texas. Since it costs quite a hefty sum to build - an approximately $90 million - when races are not being held, you can find other attractions such as concerts being held at the same venue.

Historical Houston

In Houston, there is a lot of historical places to visit that have been restored and some still located on its original sites. Here are some places you can visit with a Houston charter bus to view Houston in its former glory.

Kellum-Noble House
One of the oldest surviving masonry house in Houston, the Kellum-Noble House have been on its original site since 1847. This is a Louisiana Plantation style house that sports a double gallery that is as wide as the entire perimeter of the structure. Since 1851, a lady named Zerviah Noble conducted one of Houston’s first private schools in her home.

San Felipe Cottage

This 1868 cottage is an example of the common architecture of Houston’s German population in the late 19th century. This cottage was originally located at San Felipe Road but have been moved in 1962 to Sam Houston Park. Primarily used as a repository of Texas furniture, the San Felipe Cottage depicts how the German working class lived as one of the predominant cultural groups in Texas.

The Old Place
Moved from the banks of Clear Creek to Sam Houston Park in 1973, the 1823 Old Place is how early Texas frontier architecture was like. Made from roughly hewn cedar logs with mortise and tenon jointure, the Old Place illustrates the hardships faced by immigrants who were permitted to settle in colonial Texas in Austin’s Colony.

St. John’s Church

Built by German farmers in the northwest Harris County, the 1891 St. John’s Church supported its Evangelical Lutheran congregation. This is an interpretation of the Gothic Revival style of architecture popular in the 19th century. You can see this style evident in the church’s arched windows and shutters, with handmade cypress plank pews in the interior.

Nichols-Rice-Cherry House

Based on a Greek Revival architecture, this two-storey 1850 house has a full façade, is Ionic column supported and has a non-pedimented front porch. This architecture was popular in the southern states, and houses elegant furnishings that defined the lifestyle of the richest man of the period, William Marsh Rice.

Houston’s 1940 Air Terminal Museum

When it comes to visiting museums, there are just so many kinds of them all over the country – children’s museums, science museums, historical museums and so much more, but did you know that hidden away at 8325 Travelair Street, Houston, there is a rather unique and interesting kind of museum that you probably have not heard of, let alone visited? This museum is located just on the west side of Hobby Airport, and though it may seem to be a little out of the way if you were to drive there yourself, there is a better way for you to get there – charter a Houston bus and let the bus driver know that you would like to go and visit the 1940 Air Terminal Museum. Yes, that’s the place we are talking about – unique and interesting. Not only is it unique and interesting, we also believe that it will be a fun trip for the whole family – especially for the kids!

As you arrive at the 1940 Air Terminal Museum in the Houston charter bus with your family, you will quickly notice that the art deco of the building alone is just magnificent and being there in person, you can see up close for yourself the amazing art deco details of it; as a lot of restoration work has been done. Inside the museum, you and your family will be able to see a great collection of vintage airline souvenirs such as the silver service items, models and photographs. As you tour the museum, you will be delighted to know that it is air-conditioned, while the bay of the 1928 Carter Airmail Hangar is not. The hangar building also have a few aircraft and flight simulator displays and you will need to get one of the docents there to assist you in taking you out to the hangar as it is a short distance away down the street from the museum.

One of the things that Houston charter bus visitors enjoy most at the 1940 Air Terminal Museum is the fact that the runway for Hobby Airport is right at the back of the museum, just right on the other side of the fence, so they actually get to go outside of the museum and watch as the planes take off and land. This is considered to be quite a rare opportunity to be able to see planes taking off and landing. To bring home some of your own souvenirs from this trip, do stop by the museum’s gift shop which is located on the right the moment you walk into the building. And yes, you can expect the gift shop to be selling items related to aviation for you to choose and purchase.

Hermann Park, Houston

There are just so many activities that one can think of to do over summer. Theme parks and beaches are popular summer activities, and if you have been doing that for many years, you may want to do something a little different this year. And if you need an idea, we have just the right one for you – charter a Houston bus, load the whole family onto it and have the bus driver send all of you to the Hermann Park at 6201-A Hermann Park Drive, Houston, for a day of fun filled, under the sun activities that everyone will enjoy.

First time Houston charter bus passengers to the Hermann Park may not know much about the park, but it was presented to the City of Houston back in 1941 by Mr George Hermann and it is one of the city’s most famous parks. This 445-acre park has since seen many transformations and over time, places of interests such as the Houston Zoo, Miller Outdoor Theatre, Houston Museum of Natural Science, Houston Garden Center and the Hermann Park Golf Course added on to the Hermann Park’s importance of being an unmatched destination of outdoor entertainment for all – from the young to the old. What some may not be aware of is that in the late 1980s, due to inadequate funds and very high turnover of visitors to the park, it was poorly maintained and the state of the park became rather rundown until intervention came from a group of locals who formed “Friends of Hermann Park”, which is now known as “Hermann Park Conservancy” who worked hard on developing the park to be more user friendly and restoring the park to its original state of natural beauty.

Picnics at the Hermann Park is something that many Houston charter bus passengers enjoy at the park and there are many good spots at the park where you can have your picnic while enjoying the sun and people watch. If you are lucky, you will be able to find a perfect spot right in front of the water pool, where you will not just get to people watch, but watch ducks and turtles swimming by in the water pool. Kids get to run and play at the park freely, under the careful watch of their parents. The older kids would also bring along a basketball or volleyball to play. Sometimes, you will also see wedding photo shoots or family photo shoots taking place at the park too – which is not a rare sight at all. With a park as beautiful as this, surely it is the perfect spot for such important photo shoots.
